RÜCKBLICK – FILM AUF FILM: VIKTORIA SCHMID
Am 14. und 15. Juni hatten wir das Vergnügen, Viktoria Schmid zu einem zweitägigen Workshop nach Köln einzuladen. Dabei konnten die Teilnehmer:innen erste Erfahrungen mit der 16mm-Bolex-Kamera sammeln und fotografische Cyanotypie-Techniken kennenlernen.
Teil der Veranstaltung war außerdem ein Screening von Schmids Arbeiten sowie ein Q&A zu ihrer künstlerischen und technischen Herangehensweisen im Bereich des analogen Films.

Dieser praktische Workshop erkundet die Welt des Optical Sound und seine Verbindung zum analogen 16mm-Film. Wir beginnen mit den Grundlagen von Klang als Luftschwingung und untersuchen, wie sich diese in Lichtsignale und wieder zurück übersetzen lassen. Von geisterhaften Tönen der Glühbirnen und stroboskopischen Rhythmen, bis hin zu Tonrädern und DIY-Lichtorgeln – die Teilnehmer:innen experimentieren mit analogen Techniken, die das tiefe Verhältnis zwischen Sehen und Hören offenlegen. Der Workshop endet mit einer Demonstration eines selbstgebauten Geräts, das optischen Ton direkt auf 16mm-Film aufzeichnen kann. Offen für alle, die sich für die technischen und materiellen Schnittstellen von Ton und Bild interessieren.
Hrvoje Spudić ist ein kroatischer Künstler, der sich auf die technische Erforschung von Licht und Ton spezialisiert hat, meist mit dem Ansatz des DIY (Do it yourself) Prinzips. Seine Arbeiten verbinden moderne Elektronik und 3D-Druck mit 16mm-Projektoren und Kameras. Eines seiner Werke ist der Rotoprojektor, ein Gerät, das Bildern durch die Rotation des Projektionsapparates eine zusätzliche räumliche Dimension verleiht. Spudić beschreibt ihn wie folgt: „Der Rotoprojektor ist ein Forschungsprojekt, das sich mit der Transformation einer Filmprojektion in den physischen Raum beschäftigt – mittels mechanischer Mittel und physiologischer Phänomene wie Nachbildern und der Persistenz des Sehens.“
In einem weiteren Projekt gelang ihm die DIY-Reproduktion von optischem Ton – ein Verfahren, das bisher nur professionellen Filmlaboren vorbehalten war.
Während seines Besuchs in Köln wird Hrvoje neben dem „Rotoprojektor“ auch eine Sound-Performance präsentieren, die auf der DIY-Reproduktion von optischem Ton mit analogem Film basiert. Diese findet am Freitag, den 12.09., um 20:00 Uhr im Kulturbunker Köln-Mülheim statt. Die Performance ist Teil der Vernissage seiner Installation Rotoprojektor #2, die am Samstag und Sonntag von 11:00 bis 18:00 Uhr im Kulturbunker zu sehen sein wird. Mehr

Der zweitägige Workshop ist kostenlos, eine Anmeldung ist jedoch aufgrund begrenzter Plätze erforderlich. Anmeldungen per E-Mail an info@filmauffilm.de bis spätestens 1. September. Bitte beachtet, dass die Teilnahme an beiden Tagen Voraussetzung für die Anmeldung ist. Die Vergabe der Plätze erfolgt nach dem Prinzip „first come, first served“ mit Warteliste.

Save the date für die letzten beiden Film auf Film-Events in diesem Jahr – Film auf Film: OJOBOCA (Screening am 7. November, Workshop am 8.–9. November) sowie eine Open Projector Night zum Jahresabschluss am 30. November, bei der alle Workshop-Ergebnisse des Jahres gezeigt werden.

RECAP – FILM AUF FILM: VIKTORIA SCHMID
On June 14-15, we had the pleasure of inviting Viktoria Schmid to Cologne for a two-day workshop on gaining first experience with the 16mm Bolex camera and learn photographic cyanotype techniques.
Part of the event was a screening of Schmid’s work and a Q&A on her artistic and technical approaches to analog film.

Film auf Film: Hrvoje Spudić | 2-day workshop from Saturday 13.09. – Sunday 14.09., 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Light vs Sound – Optical Sound Workshop | Kulturbunker Köln-Mühlheim | Free workshop, English language, limited places, registration under info@filmauffilm.de until September 1st.
This hands-on workshop explores the world of optical sound and its connection to 16mm analog film. We’ll begin with the fundamentals of sound as vibrations in air and examine how these can be translated into light signals – and back again. From the eerie tones of incandescent light bulbs and stroboscopic rhythms to tone wheels and DIY light organs, participants will experiment with analog techniques that reveal the deep relationship between seeing and hearing. The workshop concludes with a demonstration of a custom-built device capable of recording optical sound directly onto 16mm film. Open to anyone interested in the technical and material intersections of sound and image.
Hrvoje Spudić is a Croatian artist who specializes in the technological exploration of light and sound, with a strong emphasis on the do-it-yourself (DIY) approach. His work incorporates modern electronics, 3D printing, and traditional devices such as 16mm projectors and cameras. One of his works is the ‘Rotoprojector’, a device that adds an extra spatial dimension to images via the rotation of the projection device. This movement, which can be synchronized with the recording process, allows the projected image to dynamically traverse the space. Spudić describes it as follows: ‘The Rotoprojector is a research project that deals with the transformation of a film projection into physical space, using mechanical means and physiological phenomena of afterimages and persistence of vision.’ In another project, he succeeded in DIY optical sound reproduction, a feat previously reserved for professional film laboratories.
During his visit to Köln, besides the ‘rotoprojector’, Hrvoje will present a sound performance that is based on DIY optical sound reproduction working with analogue film, on Friday, 12.09, 20:00, at Kulturbunker Köln-Mühlheim. The performance will be part of the vernissage of his Rotoprojector #2 installation, which will be on display on Saturday and Sunday, 11:00-18:00 at Kulturbunker. More

The two-day workshop is free of charge, but registration is required due to the limited number of places. You can register by e-mail to info@filmauffilm.de until September 1. Please note that participation on both days is a requirement for your registration. Registration is on “first come, first served” basis with a waiting list.
