In this two-day workshop, we will explore 16mm analog film. We will combine some technical background with examples from selected short films and hands-on filming, working with film as a material and looking at how light, movement, and simple processes shape images in often unexpected ways.
Over the two days, we will create a collective film on black-and-white reversal stock, moving through the full process from beginning to end. This includes working with 16mm film stock, shooting with a Bolex camera – a spring wound hand-held camera widely used in independent and experimental filmmaking – developing the footage by hand, simple analogue editing, and finally projecting the completed work on film. In short, we will go through all the essential steps of making a 16mm film by hand, using independent methods.
The workshop is open to everyone above 16 years of age and invites especially those who have not yet worked with analogue film and is curious about moving images and hands-on ways of experimenting with film. Participation is free of charge, and all materials will be provided. No prior knowledge is required. The number of participants is limited. The workshop will be held in English; we can also clarify things in German if needed.

In diesem zweitägigen Workshop beschäftigen wir uns mit dem analogen 16mm-Schmalfilm. Wir verbinden technische Grundlagen mit Beispielen aus ausgewählten Kurzfilmen und praktischen Dreharbeiten, setzen uns mit Film als Material auseinander und untersuchen, wie Licht, Bewegung und einfache Verfahren Bilder auf oft unerwartete Weise gestalten.
Im Laufe der beiden Tage werden wir gemeinsam einen Film auf schwarz-weißem Umkehrfilm erstellen und dabei den gesamten Prozess von Anfang bis Ende durchführen. Dazu gehören der Umgang mit 16-mm-Filmmaterial, das Filmen mit einer Bolex-Kamera – einer federbetriebenen Handkamera, die im unabhängigen und experimentellen Filmemachen weit verbreitet ist –, die manuelle Entwicklung des Filmmaterials, einfache analoge Schnitttechniken und schließlich die Projektion des fertigen Werks in analoger Form. Kurz gesagt: Wir werden alle wesentlichen Schritte der handwerklichen Herstellung eines 16-mm-Films mit unabhängigen DIY-Methoden durchlaufen.
Der Workshop steht allen ab 16 Jahren offen und richtet sich insbesondere an diejenigen, die noch keine Erfahrung mit analogem Film haben und neugierig auf bewegte Bilder sowie praktische Experimente mit Film sind. Die Teilnahme ist kostenlos, und alle Materialien werden gestellt. Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist begrenzt. Der Workshop findet auf Englisch statt; bei Bedarf können wir einzelne Fragen auch auf Deutsch erläutern.
