    Contact printing is a foundational process in photochemical filmmaking, not only essential for producing film prints, but also a powerful creative method for artists exploring materiality, texture, and experimental image making. A contact printer transfers images from one strip of film onto another by running the original film together with unexposed film stock while light passes through the original image.  read more

    FILM AUF FILM: NAN WANG

    Nan Wang is a multi-disciplinary media artist and experimental filmmaker based in Rotterdam. She studied in the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and Willem de Kooning Academy. In her works, she employs a poetic, abstract visual language to construct immersive experiences. She frequently discovers beauty and philosophical meanings in discarded man-made objects or substances, creating artworks that center around themes of identity, perceptions, technology, and social interactions. Utilizing both old and new technologies, some designed and built by herself, her portfolio encompasses interactive projection installations, optical devices, live audiovisual performances, and experimental films. In addition to her artistic work, Nan Wang is a core member of the artist-run film lab Filmwerkplaats in Rotterdam. Her artworks are currently distributed by Light Cone Paris, LIMA Amsterdam, EYE Experimental. read more

    In diesem Sommerferien-Workshop experimentieren wir mit der Kraft der Sonne und Pflanzen. Eine Blume, ein Blatt, oder eine einzelne Blüte – all das kann auf einem Filmstreifen sichtbar werden, denn mit Hilfe einer Zaubertinktur zeichnet sich das Innenleben der Pflanze auf einem Filmstreifen ab. Gemeinsam werden die Kinder an einzelnen Filmstreifen arbeiten. Den daraus entstandenen, zusammengefügten Film schauen wir uns anschließend analog an. Die Phytogramme auf 16-mm-Film können aufgeteilt und mit nach Hause genommen werden.

    Der Workshop findet zwischen 11 und 15 Uhr im Foyer des Filmhaus Köln statt.

    Teilnahme ab 5 Jahren. Wegen des Einsatzes von Haushaltschemie ist die Anwesenheit der Eltern beim Platzieren der Pflanzen auf dem Film notwendig. Einweghandschuhe werden von uns zur Verfügung gestellt.

    Bringt gerne etwas Proviant zum Mittagessen im Foyer und Pflanzen und Blumen mit – ob aus dem Garten, vom Balkon, aus dem Park oder der Küche! Am besten eignen sich kleinere, flache Blätter, Blüten oder Gräser, die nicht viel größer als der 16-mm Filmstreifen sind. Es kann aber natürlich gerne experimentiert werden!

    In this two-day workshop, we will explore 16mm analog film. We will combine some technical background with examples from selected short films and hands-on filming, working with film as a material and looking at how light, movement, and simple processes shape images in often unexpected ways.

    Over the two days, we will create a collective film on black-and-white reversal stock, moving through the full process from beginning to end. This includes working with 16mm film stock, shooting with a Bolex camera – a spring wound hand-held camera widely used in independent and experimental filmmaking – developing the footage by hand, simple analogue editing, and finally projecting the completed work on film. In short, we will go through all the essential steps of making a 16mm film by hand, using independent methods. read more

    FILM AUF FILM: Ute Aurand

    Ute Aurand is a Berlin-based experimental filmmaker, curator, and film educator. She studied at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb) and emerged as part of a new generation of women shaping experimental cinema in 1980’s Berlin and West Germany. Working primarily with 16mm film, Aurand has developed a distinctive cinematic language grounded in rhythm, kaleidoscopic cuts, and recurring motifs. Her films explore everyday moments with remarkable visual textures. Since the 1990s, diary filmmaking has been at the heart of Aurand’s practice. Her filmography encompasses more than forty works, spanning from the 1980s to the present day. read more

    The two-day workshop from Saturday, 08.11. (10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) to Sunday 09.11. (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), at EYE GOT SPACE Köln, is going to be defined by the title: Subverting the image – A Workshop on Refusal in Analog Film.

    We are rapidly entering a state of infinite images, where vast amounts of energy and attention are being devoted to constructing a mirror world that is intended to surpass our own material reality. But in a finite world, striving toward this simulated infinity comes at a cost: the erosion of meaning and the collapse of the very world we inhabit. Drowning in this deluge of images, perhaps it is time to reconsider our relationship with them. This workshop invites filmmakers and artists to explore strategies of subversion —methods of working against the image from within the language of film. read more

    OJOBOCA is a Berlin-based artist duo formed by Anja Dornieden and Juan David González Monroy. Their work is rooted in an exploration of cinema as a social ritual and as a tool for generating collective experience. They call their practice Orrorism, which they define as a simulated method of inner and outer transformation. Since 2010, OJOBOCA has created a series of experimental films, installations, and performances that have been screened at film festivals and art venues worldwide, among them the Museum of the Moving Image, ICA London, Anthology Film Archives, Berlinale, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and New York Film Festival. Their work is also known for its innovative use of analog film techniques, which they continue to develop as members of the artist-run film lab, LaborBerlin. read more

    This hands-on workshop explores the world of optical sound and its connection to 16mm analog film. We’ll begin with the fundamentals of sound as vibrations through air and examine how these can be translated into light signals – and back again. From the eerie tones of incandescent lightbulbs and stroboscopic rhythms to tonewheels and DIY light organs, participants will experiment with analog techniques that reveal the deep relationship between seeing and hearing. The workshop concludes with a demonstration of a custom-built device capable of recording optical sound directly onto 16mm film. Open to anyone interested in the technical and material intersections of sound and image. read more
